Strengthening wastewater resilience in Otago

Requiring 20 km of new pipe, new pump stations, and the decommissioning of legacy infrastructure, the Upper Clutha Wastewater Conveyance Scheme (UCWWCS) is a major multi-million-dollar project by Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC).

Designed to support future regional growth and strengthen network resilience, the project’s civil works were awarded to Fulton Hogan, with Humes securing the contract to supply all specialised wastewater main pipe.

“This project went out for tender in December 2024 with Fulton Hogan Central selected as the successful contractor and Humes winning the pipe supply,” says Angela Lacey, Central Otago Area Account Manager for Humes. "Our first order arrived in August this year for the initial load of 315mm OD polyethylene (PE) pipe. The first load of larger 630mm OD pipe was delivered in September. Both pipe sizes are supplied in 18-metre lengths. To date, we’ve delivered 6.048 km of 630mm OD pipe and 6.696 km of 315mm OD pipe. Further deliveries are scheduled from January through May.”

Angela adds, “We’ve been working closely with Darren Clark “Diesel” Project Manager for Humes, who is doing an exceptional job coordinating with the Alexandra team and keeping the project running smoothly.”
